You Are Capable

Ladies, if there’s one thing I want you to know, more than anything else I ever communicate to you, it’s that you are capable. Of anything. Someone once told me that women are actual, real life, bonefied superheroes, and she was right.

I remember when we bought and moved into our first home. We had purchased a car, a house, and remodeled our kitchen all within a relatively short amount of time. By the time it was all said and done, we were moved into our house but had almost no budget for furniture (please do not take financial advice from 20-year-old me). I remember looking at dining room tables and realizing that they were $600+ and there was no way we could swing that. So, after figuring out that they only cost about $200 to make, I decided to build one.

Up until this point I had never built anything in my entire life, but I thought “I know that human beings make tables, and I am also a human being, so surely I can figure out how to make a table too.” And so I did. And then we made a coffee table, and a couple of shelves, and a bed frame, and cubbies, and a changing table… the list goes on and on. Over the years we’ve made tons of things for our house. Now when a need comes up, we first ask ourselves “can we make it?'“

Sure, building a table is a pretty insignificant accomplishment, but this journey taught me a valuable lesson. It taught me that I am capable of anything, and you are too. I know there will be many times over the course of your life that you will wonder if you’re good enough, worthy enough, skilled enough to accomplish what’s in front of you. I often wonder if I’m capable of being the mom I want to be, the wife I want to be, and if I’m capable of going after my own dreams and passions in the process. When I find myself asking these questions, I always go back to that first table I built. I had no idea what I was doing, but I went out on blind faith that I could figure it out. We are so much more capable than we think. We just have to be willing to bet on ourselves and to stretch ourselves until our capacity is expanded to fit our biggest and greatest desires.
